The Right Steps at the Right Time
Experience Matters!
I believe my experience matters. I think your experience matters, too. But over the years, I’ve learned that we have to make our experience matter. We can’t sit around and wait for things to happen in our favor.
As both a writer of career materials and a former career center manager, I’ve spent years in career planning. Things have changed tremendously since I first got into the writing business, but the core is still the same: Have access to something to sell and figure out wants it. (That’s something someone shared with me years ago, and I still hang on to it.)
It’s my mission to help would-be business owners find something to sell and strategies for finding their market.
A little About my Journey
The Power of Experience!
It seems like I have always imagined myself as a writer. I never saw myself as a novelist or an investigative reporter, but I enjoy “how-to” writing. I’ve written hundreds of how-to articles, resumes, and a weekly advice column syndicated to newspapers nationwide. (That was fun!) But the most fun (and the most learning) was working for myself…
Over two decades ago, I wrote my first book. I didn’t want to go through the rejection so common in the writing business, so I decided to publish the book myself. From that idea grew my teen career books, Every Young Person’s Guide to Life and Career Planning, Every Young Person’s Guide to Much Better Grades, and Every Young Person’s Guide to Job Hunting.
I did OK independently. But, due to technology, book publishing was headed for a major change 20 or so years ago. (Things are still changing today.) Independent publishers like myself were severely affected. With the instability of the publishing industry, I was more than happy to take a break—telling myself that one day I would pick up publishing again and continue with my crusade to make all young people plan their way through life.
But it didn’t happen that way for me.
And, then Restarting
Now or Never!
:Years went by before I decided to venture into self-employment again. Our world’s recent pandemic certainly gave me pause to think. Like many of you, I’ve spent time assessing my life decisions. And I, too, understand: It’s Now or Never. When it comes to a business start-up, I choose now.
That said, I conceded that many startups don’t survive past the first few years. And that includes micro businesses—the kinds I’m advocating you consider.
Let’s mitigate that. Let’s follow what the experts are saying: Let’s plan our ideas and agree to learn what need to make our ventures work.
The World has Changed. Let's Change With It
You 2.0
Never has this statement felt more important.
Do you feel that you’re too late to jump into something new? Does technology intimidate you?
Well, here’s the thing: You’re not too late. And what you need to know isn’t over your head. If you decide to take this on, you might find yourself spending some evenings listening to podcasts or viewing someone’s training webinar, but consider that part of the new you. You’re creating you, 2.0.
