Experience Matters!

I believe my experience matters. I think your experience matters, too. But over the years, I’ve learned that we have to make our experience matter. That’s particularly true as we turn to recareering. What experiences can we draw on to help us create a new life and possibly a new income?

A Little About My Journey

It seems like I have always imagined myself as a writer. I never saw myself as a novelist or an investigative reporter, but I enjoy “how-to” writing. I’ve written hundreds of how-to articles, resumes, and a weekly advice column syndicated to newspapers nationwide. Over two decades ago, I wrote my first book. I sent it to a publisher who praised my book, but they didn’t publish it.

I didn’t want to go through the rejection so common in the writing business, so I decided to publish any new books that I wrote myself. From that idea grew my teen career books,  Every Young Person’s Guide to Life and Career Planning, Every Young Person’s Guide to Much Better Grades, and Every Young Person’s Guide to Job Hunting—all of which sold very well.

That was fun and even rewarding, but it was also a lot of work! But, due to technology, book publishing was headed for a major change 20 or so years ago. Independent publishers like me were severely affected.  With the instability of the publishing industry, I was more than happy to take a break, telling myself that one day I would pick up publishing again and continue with my crusade to make all young people plan their way through life.

And, then Restarting

Now or Never!

With the instability of the publishing industry, I was more than happy to take a break, telling myself that one day I would pick up publishing again and continue with my crusade to make all young people plan their way through life. But it didn’t happen that way for me.

It was years before I got back—and you’re looking at some of the results now. Still in the field, but with an audience that has grown up —like me!

Ask me what I’ve learned? You’re starting a business.  Act accordingly.

That said, I conceded that many startups don’t survive past the first few years. But you can say that about businesses of all sizes. (Who would ever think my favorite Dollar Store would crumble?)

We’re mitigating some of that. We’re considering low-cost ideas that allow us to do something we know and love.

If you’re 50-plus and transitioning toward a career change, there are many reasons your idea didn’t make it. But don’t let the lack of success be because you didn’t try.

Never has this statement felt more important.

Do you feel that you’re too old to try something new? Does technology intimidate you?

Well, here’s the thing: You’re not too late. And what you need to know isn’t over your head.  If you decide to start your own business or change careers, you might find yourself spending some evenings listening to podcasts or viewing someone’s training webinar, but consider that part of the new you.  You’re creating you, 2.0.
